The commitment homeowners make when designing and building a new home, a renovation or making an addition to your home can be a big undertaking- and potentially it won't be a process that you will want to do multiple times in short succession.
We recommend to our clients they consider future-proofing their home so that it will continue to perform in a way that suits their short, medium and long term needs, without the need for additional and sometimes expensive remodeling down the track.
The reality is, that we find there are a number of consistent things that our clients aspire for, regardless of their budget.
Pragmatic decisions often include:
Master bedroom - with an ensuite with reasonable wardrobe space
Storage
Family bathroom
A bedroom for each child
Storage
Kitchen that has a connection to the family room
Space for visitors to stay [grandparents and friends etc]
Laundry + storage!
Space for vehicles, bikes, sports equipment etc - did we mention storage?!
Aspirational decisions often include:
A home that provides a feeling of safety
Comfortable
A sense of pride when showing visitors your home
A place to rejuvenate and de-stress
A home that feels great, and that you feel great when you're in it
A place that supports you and your family living your lives to the best
While a young family may not require an individual bedroom for each sibling or a second living space immediately, designing and building flexible, adaptable spaces or at least considering the future scenario is important to ensure your home will work for your family both now and in the future.
In our architectural practice we believe that great design, that brings some kind of joy to its occupants, doesn't necessarily mean providing extra space or filling your home with lots of things. In fact sometimes, what we chose not to put in a space is just as important as what we do decide to invest in and include in your home.
Bringing natural light into spaces at certain time of the day, providing a considered view through to a garden or courtyard, or connecting spaces so that families can be together whilst doing different activities, among other design moves will start to spark the magic and convert your project from a pragmatic shopping list into a home.
It's really about making a home that works for you; how you want to feel and live with your family now and into in the future. Consider your "why" for completing your project and let every decision you make be guided by that and we promise you will create a home that works for you, that you spend money on things that matter most to you, and allows you to be your best versions of yourselves as a family.
