Elwood Federation Bungalow: A Heritage Home Reimagined
Heritage renovation and contemporary addition | Elwood, Melbourne
Set on a leafy, plane-tree-lined street in Elwood, this Federation-era bungalow shows how a heritage home can be renewed for modern family life without losing what makes it special. Chadwick Architects + Interiors was engaged to carefully restore the home's character, reconfigure its interior and add a contemporary extension, so a much-loved period residence could meet the needs of its owners for decades to come.
The clients wanted a home that honoured its Edwardian and Federation roots while working better for everyday life. The original floor plan, like many Elwood heritage homes, was divided into small, enclosed rooms with limited natural light and little connection to the outdoors. The brief called for more space, better flow and a stronger relationship between inside and out, with the street presence of the home protected.
The street frontage is the heart of any heritage renovation, and here it was treated with great care. Our team undertook a detailed restoration of the home's signature Federation features:
Timber gable detailing, including the decorative battening and roughcast-style infill that define the bungalow's profile, was repaired and repainted in a refined, heritage-sympathetic palette.
The terracotta tiled roof was retained and renewed, preserving the rich colour and texture that anchor the home in its streetscape.
The return verandah, with its chunky rendered piers, timber balustrade and turned detailing, was carefully reinstated where fabric had deteriorated or been lost.
The original leadlight front door and glazing were retained as a feature of the entry, glowing warmly at dusk.
Brick and render fencing was refreshed with new black metalwork, giving the front boundary a crisp, contemporary edge that still sits comfortably within the heritage context.
Every replacement element was matched to the original in profile, material and proportion, so the restored home reads as though it has always looked this good.
Behind the heritage façade, the internal layout was reworked to suit the way the family lives today. Rather than gutting the home, we preserved the rooms that give a period residence its soul, and then reorganised the circulation and living zones around them. The result is a clearer, more generous plan with better flow between spaces, improved daylight and a layout that supports both family life and entertaining.
A new extension provides the additional living space the original footprint could not. It is set back and distinct from the heritage fabric, so the original home remains the hero from the street while the new addition delivers modern comfort at the rear. Contemporary materials, clean lines and generous glazing contrast with the period detailing, creating a dialogue between old and new rather than an imitation of either. Integrated off-street parking and a refined garage frontage were also resolved with care, keeping the streetscape uncluttered.
Elwood sits within the City of Bayside, where many homes are protected by heritage overlays. A successful project depends on understanding both the planning framework and the architectural character of the home. Chadwick managed the heritage planning process from concept through to permit, designing a scheme that respects the significance of the property while delivering the contemporary outcome our clients were after.
